The Tienda Jaguar Family in Guaitil, Costa Rica
Guaitil is famous throughout Costa Rica because of its pre-Columbian Chorotega style pottery. I spent a few days with the family as they dug the sand to make the clay, formed the pots with corn cobs, and fired the vessels in a wood fired kiln. It was a real trip and reminded my again why I love Costa Rica so much. This beautiful and humble family is carrying on an 800 year old tradition of pottery while globalization circles them, making vessels as if time stopped.
